Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara was to chair his first Cabinet meeting Wednesday since he returned from France early this month where he underwent a surgery.

“I have completely recovered now and tomorrow I will chair the council of ministers,” he said on Tuesday in an interview he jointly held with Beninoise President Thomas Yayi Boni, who is visiting him at his residence in Cocody, in east Abidjan.

President Ouattara returned home on March 2, after undergoing a surgical operation in France.

He has since insisted he was fit to “continue the major projects” he had started.

This Ivorian council of Cabinet meeting marks the resumption of the ministerial weekly exercise.

Swarmed the streets

The last meeting was held on January 22, 2014 before President Ouattara left to France for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh on Monday sent envoys to the recuperating Ivorian President, who is also the Ecowas chairman.

The emissaries were Gambia’s minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Aboubacar Senghore, and the Finance and Economic Affairs minister, Mr Kebba Touray.

They visited Ouattara in Abidjan and prayed for his speedy recovery and restoration of good health.

Dr Senghore said Gambia and Côte d’Ivoire had a strong fraternal relationship, with shared values.

Another West African president who were expected on Tuesday in Abidjan to see Ouattara was Faure Gnassingbe of Togo.

President Blaise Compaoré of Burkina Faso was said to have called the Ivorian leader last week to show solidarity.

Thousands of supporters had swarmed the streets of Abidjan early this month to welcome President Ouattara when he returned home after a month in France.
